    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am a tax summer intern and work with my team mostly of tax compliance projects for their clients. Day-to-day, other members of the team ask if I am available to help them with their tasks. Things I have been able to help out with include writing risk assessments, onboarding new clients, drafting and finalising tax computations, writing tax compliance reports, learning about transfer pricing and learning how to interpret a set of accounts along with a trial balance effectively.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt time management skills when having lots of tasks to juggle at once. Tax involves working on lots of different projects at the same time and it is important to find out hoe urgent tasks are, and be honest about when you are able to finish it. I have also improved professional communication skills, both within my team and when drafting emails to send to clients.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My team gave me a wide variety of responsibility during my internship and helped me with things I wasn't sure how to do. I felt able to take on responsibility of getting involved with helpful and important tasks as my team were very helpful and reviewed all my work to give me feedback.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • During my internship, I was assigned a people manager and a buddy. As a whole, the team and company were always willing to help and show me how to do something or explain something to me. My assigned buddy would show me how to do new things, even 2 or 3 times if I forgot. Everybody was very supportive and always made sure I knew what to do when they gave me a new task.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Within the company, I felt very supported and included straight away. The whole team immediately included me in their conversations and asked me about myself, and invited me out to group lunches or company events. The atmosphere was relaxed but professional and felt very welcoming to people asking questions. It very much like they would rather take time to show me what to do rather then leave me to try and figure it out.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • In applying to BDO (or in general), find out what the company stands for, and make sure it aligns with your values and think about why. Practice for any competency tests that an online application might include, and remember to link experiences you have had to any interview questions relating to soft skills, technical skills and BDO's core values. Try to come across as confident, but no need to worry too much about knowing lots of technical things about the position you are applying for.
