Overview
I sat in the Finance and Restructuring team for my 6 week internship and it was an amazing experience. I got the opportunity to work on live client matters and some of my responsibilities included drafting various letter and carrying out research. I was well engaged in tasks for other areas of law I had interest in and had various one on one chats with fee earners. It was a definitely worthwhile experience!
Skills
I have developed the my existing skill of active communication as it was needed in daily communication with fee earners. I as well developed the skill of adaptation by being able to adapt to an area of law I had no knowledge. Lastly I developed the skill of attention to detail as I was able to understand the cruciality of this in client every deal or transaction
Responsibilities
Yes, I got the opportunity to do both intern and trainee tasks on live client matters that the trainees, associates, senior associates and partners were working on. I was allowed enough independence with the ability to ask questions where needed. I felt very confident in doing each task as enough background was given to me beforehand to understand what I was taking on.
Support & Guidance
More than enough. Everyone was always willing to help and take out at least 5 mins to offer quick guidance. There was never a time I felt stuck on a task or confused as I could just simply ask for support which will be granted easily.
Culture
Everyone was so friendly and approachable both during working hours and lunch. There was always time for everything (time for a laugh and time to be serious) so there was therefore a good balance. From partner to trainee, everyone was so easily to talk to and so hospitable. It made me more comfortable and relaxed.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it completely. I am so excited to be returning back to the firm! Asides from all the work that we did, there were so many social events that allowed us to enjoy and have fun! Lunch times were also very fun!
Yes
Be yourself! Don't put on a facade of who you are not, be your true authentic self and let the firm embrace that. Be jovial, put on a smile and be happy! Ask questions! This is something I have learnt as everyone will always be willing to answer. Do not be afraid to take on responsibilities! Understand the firms culture before you apply and make sure your application matches that.
