Overview
Vacation students were asked to complete various tasks in their respective departments (typically proofreading, research, email-writing or summarising tasks). We were also invited to induction events and presentations on different aspects of the firm, allowing us to gain a true insight into firm objectives, identity and culture. This included talks given by the Global Senior Partner and London Managing Partner, as well as trainees and associates from various teams.
Skills
The placement really allowed me to develop my organisational skills - I was lucky to have been given work from multiple people across the department, meaning that I had to prioritise tasks and find ways to complete them well, yet efficiently. This was an extremely valuable insight into the work of a lawyer but also into how the work itself is completed.
Business Insight
The firm was very transparent about the business and roles available, including explaining the training contract selection process. This was much appreciated as it was something most vacation students were looking to understand.
Culture
The culture is really friendly, and this was made clear to us on the very first day. Everyone was truly welcoming and invested in our success. I felt very comfortable approaching most team members to ask questions or for clarification, despite the questions being silly at times. Trainees also put in lots of effort to organise fun socials for vacation students, which was much appreciated.
Your Impressions
The scheme was highly enjoyable - because people were very friendly, most of the stress and nerves dissipated after the first day. I could truly focus on learning more about the firm and completing the work to the best of my ability.
Yes
The main piece of advice I would give to students applying to PM would be to be yourself. A large part of PMs identity is rooted in the approachability of its lawyers and its friendly atmosphere. Show that you are someone who is pleasant to work with, and be enthusiastic. This said, being too comfortable from the start may be perceived as unprofessional, so a balance should be struck.
