Overview
- Performed several retirement quotes and CETVs, some model testing, and also updating actuarial reports. Work was very varied and opportunities to learn about specialist teams also. - Part of job is also networking and building relationships, with many socials to foster this sense of community. - Aon intern group project to be completed with other interns from different solution lines, on topics e.g climate change, wellbeing, etc. This project is presented at the end of the internship.
Skills
- Developed a greater sense of attention to detail - important to get dates and member information correct for calculations and reports. - Developed ability to manage deadlines. Sometimes had multiple work streams due at once and had to organise myself to complete all on time. - Learned to be forthcoming with questions and not being hesitant of asking senior colleagues - everyone was there to help. - Developed my applied mathematical skills by seeing mathematics in action in models and behind the scene tools used by actuaries.
Responsibilities
- There were opportunities to work with senior colleagues. - Tasks were assigned following training so good responsibility given to get involved in actuarial work and important reports. - Some responsibility given also with out of work opportunities, like getting involved in work experience programme targeting secondary school pupils, and joining business resource groups e.g. multicultural and social mobility network. - There was also a leadership opportunity with the option of being group leader for the internship project
Support & Guidance
- There was a great structure in place for support, with assigned manager, buddy, and also team lead. All were forthcoming with help and delegating work and other opportunities available. - The graduates in the team were a good initial point of contact as had gone through similar training and internships recently, so were supportive with questions and other advice. - Also opportunity for support with the early careers team, who provided advice e.g financial and support available.
Culture
- There was a very friendly atmosphere on the floor, where questions however small were welcome and support was always available for work tasks and general career advice. - As it was summer there were also several socials e.g. board games and sporting, which was great for team building and getting to know others. - Company culture was strengthened to many company wide events and talks which brought people together, e.g. multicultural network lunch and learns
Your Impressions
- Really enjoyed learning more about actuarial work and felt got a great insight into this from the placement. Got to engage with colleagues at different stages of their careers and see the progression opportunities. - Enjoyed developing important skills. For example, developed skills on excel and also on attention to detail with calculations and report/specification updating. - Also found the office culture very accepting and friendly, which made the 9 weeks enjoyable and a great learning experience.
Yes
- Familiarize yourself with actuarial exams, as these form a large part of the initial career path of the actuarial exams. Show that you are committed to undertaking them and are able to balance and appreciate studying and working at the same time. - Expect to learn everything else on the job as difficult to learn the technical skills prior. Others anticipate that there will be difficulties with adjusting at first so asking questions will be really important.
