    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day to day basis, I do some coding to aid the risk analytics team and I also make slips for clients. Once made, I have to check it's suitability with Brokers and upload for underwriter's signatures. Once the slip is bound, I process the account to create an invoice, then an evidence of cover - all of which get sent to the client. Regarding the coding, this is not required for the job but I wanted to do it on my own initiative as I enjoy it - there are many ways in Aon to shape your own internship.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have definitely learned many new skills! Now I know how the broking process works and the skills involved in this are: ownership skills, networking skills and mainly people based skills ad this is a very client facing role. You need to have good relations with the clients and the underwriters. Doing the coding project, I truly developed my MATLAB skills, this took a lot of initiative and independent learning. The presenting aspect of this internship definitely strengthens leadership and public speaking skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, definitely. I felt like I had ownership of what I was doing and I did not feel like I was being micromanaged. The team treats you like a proper employee and you get real responsibility and real work from day 1. You have the responsibility to shape your internship. Although I applied for a client facing role, I still had the opportunity to do some coding and a very mathematical task because I took up the opportunity and this project is part of an ongoing project within Aon and I am working with the same data and making progress with the project!

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was able to access support from anyone - no matter what level they are working at. Everyone at Aon is very friendly and always willing to help. I wanted responsibility and ownership but obviously I have much less experience than everyone else in the team and very little knowledge so they always trained me and then let me get along with the tasks myself, at my own pace. If I had any questions whilst I was working on the tasks set, I was very comfortable to go back and ask any questions.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is awesome - everyone is always willing to help out. I've had chats with several teams within Aon and they have made time for me to ask them any questions or explain what their role is to me. I have not seen this amount of support or the "Growing together" aspect in any other companies that I have been to. It is very commendable that such a large company has a constant friendly culture regardless of the team or the job role.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I did not know what to expect when I received an offer but my team members and manager really eased me into the role and got me trained up so that I can perform the tasks they needed me to. The aspect I loved the most was being able to do the numerical coding task. It has helped me become slightly proficient in MATLAB and using real data to impact the overall progress of this project is very fulfilling.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Aon
  • Take any opportunity that comes your way. For the interview stages, do as much company research as possible and as cliche as it might sound, be yourself. It is what Aon wants. Be your authentic self and make sure you've done your research and apply to the field you want to learn more about, there is something for everyone at Aon. Last bit of advice is networking, it'll get you into the Insurance Industry and it is what will keep you competitive within it.
