The Role
I really really enjoyed my placement and the colleagues at IBM - they helped me become a more rounded person in terms of skills and knowledge.
I was very valued by my colleagues and that was evident by the timely feedback they used to provide.
Help was available whenever it was need, regardless of what help was need on. IBM has a vast knowledge bank and most of it is due to the investment it makes in its employees.
I was fairly busy on a daily basis - but there was an element of "surprise" in each day. You knew what work you had to do but you never knew what new piece of work would come up each day.
I had a unique role in the sense that I was the only one performing that role in our department. I had support from two colleagues/managers who I would report to and work together with.
The skills I developed in my placement will last me a very very long time. They certainly did help me in my final year of studies and they still help me now in my graduate role.
The Company
It was a very relaxed atmosphere and friendly too. From time to time we would have socials and breakfast together in the office.
Since I was part of an acquired company and we all were going through the change and migrating over to the parent company there were a few creases in the organisation of the work placement. However, that had its own benefits in that we had to be proactive and find out what other colleagues in other offices were doing, hence, helping us grow our network.
There was not much of formal training and development, most of the material that I learnt was either picked up on the job or taught to me by my manager.

Working from home
I have joined the same company as a graduate and am extremely happy with where I am at the moment.
The Culture
Our group was a phenomenal group in the sense that more than half of my placement colleagues have joined the company as a graduate. We worked well together and had many socials together too.
The place where i lived and worked was well connected and had fairly cheap cost of living. There were good socialising spots too e.g. bowling, cinema, clubs, etc.
It was fairly good. I did enjoy it from time to time.
There were a tonne of other activities that we could do - as long as we finished our core work. We got to go to a kindergarten school and build a kiddy computer for them, we got to go visit universities and represent the company at careers fairs and we had lots of networking events too.
