Overview
Learning the basic actuarial terms and completing training in the first couple of weeks. Then put on a couple of real life projects and completing tasks for members of the team (with a lot of support). I have been working on a lot of reserving templates in order to calculate the amount of money a company needs to hold for future claims.
Skills
Learnt new excel skills and how to behave in the workplace. Increased my communication skills by asking members of the teams to go on coffee chats and improved teamwork skills through the Aon Story Project that you work on with other interns.
Responsibilities
Worked on real life projects and the results of these are sent to the client after going through checking and reviewing (so don't worry if you make a mistake as you're still learning).
Support & Guidance
Given a buddy who set up weekly meetings and made me feel very welcome and answered any initial questions I had. The whole team was very supportive and answered all of my questions (no matter how silly or trivial). I felt happy asking everyone from graduates to senior associates for help and everyone took as much time as I needed to explain things to me.
Culture
Extremely friendly and helpful - the office was very chatty and fun but everyone still managed to knuckle down and finish their work. The socials made the team feel very close.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship - had to overcome a few hurdles like commuting but I soon got used to it and enjoyed coming into the office everyday. I was impressed how much responsibility we were given and how the team would answer any queries and happy to include you in any project that may be of interest.
Yes
Be yourself during the interview process and don't stress - just be yourself (especially in the group task). Definitely apply as working in the centre of London is really fun and team is so welcoming. Make sure you have taken an interest in what is affecting the insurance industry right now (for example parametric insurance and cyber).
