Overview
There were to two and a half weeks of initial training about general tasks that the team does (e.g. reserving, pricing etc.) and then we were assigned to real, client projects. I completed a scenario risk-modelling task, in which I carried out every task involved from the initial stages to the writing of the report at the end. I received a lot of assistance from fellow team members when I encountered difficulties. My day-to-day tasks involved Excel and also Word for the writing of the report.
Skills
I have developed strong Excel skills throughout this internship, as well as learning how to interact with a team in a professional setting.
Responsibilities
I was given two client projects to complete mostly by myself but was able to receive help from more experienced members of the team when I stuck on a specific issue.
Support & Guidance
I received plenty of support from a variety of people on the team (including my line manager, people conducting our training, an assigned buddy and also newer grads on the team).
Culture
The company culture was very inclusive and I felt very safe, it was refreshing to see how well employees were treated and how much flexibility and judgement they were given over their working life.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yes
I would recommend doing some thorough research about the insurance industry as a whole and specifically, what the role of an actuary is. It would be helpful to have some commercial awareness as well.
