Overview
Overall my role is withing the client team in the investments solution line. We work with trustees of DB pension schemes, advising them on how their pension scheme should be invested. I did things like valuations, quarterly reports, data analysis and research tasks for new ventures of the business as well as reformatting of some documents and powerpoints. During the internship we were also given an intern project to do with some other interns in different solution lines.
Skills
During the internship I've worked a lot with Microsoft office (excel, word and powerpoint). This was through the day to day work given from the job as well as working on the intern project. As a result, I've hugely improved my ability to use these applications, which has been useful as this is a skill that can be used at university or at any different office job. I've also developed my communication skills.
Responsibilities
I was given some responsibility. For instance, the valuation and quarterly reports that I completed where used for clients. Furthermore the formatting that I completed was used for future documents that were going to be sent out to clients as well. The data analysis and research tasks that I completed were also a responsibility as it was used as a basis for new business ventures. Alongside this, the intern project was meant to help the business improve in some aspect.
Support & Guidance
I received a good amount of support and guidance during the internship. I was given a manager who would schedule in weekly catch-ups which was helpful. I was also given a buddy who would also schedule in weekly catchups which was nice especially as my buddy had done the internship previously as well so I could ask questions. The internship also included global meetings with all the interns to help us with important life skills like presentation skills.
Culture
The company culture seemed friendly and welcoming. It was a hot desking office so you could sit anywhere and be next to different people each day. Also whenever I asked anyone to schedule in a introduction chat to learn more about them, the majority of people got back to me which was nice. The company is also united throughout all of it's offices and many people from different offices would come to the London office
Your Impressions
It was an enjoyable experience. Working on the intern project was particularly enjoyable as I was able to work and interact with different interns from different offices and floors that I wouldn't have been able to meet otherwise. The work gave me a good insight into the type of work that people do in the industry which was enjoyable and if gave me the opportunity to figure out if this is something that I would like to pursue.
Yes
Make sure to prepare. Research the company, look at their social media to see anything new that they're doing. Practise common interview questions. For instance you already know that 'why Aon' and 'why the stream' will be asked so make sure to have an answer for that. Furthermore make sure you know the company's values and align with them as these are unique to the company and will show that you may be a good fit.
