Overview
I work with the urban design team, working on a wide range of projects from master planning to urban regeneration. My main role has been working on vision documents which involves organising the drawings into a portfolio to present to the client. I have also helped create visual plans and illustrations. Along with work in the office I have attended several site visits which involves meeting the construction team for updates on the project.
Skills
I have had the opportunity to improve my digital graphic skills, using Adobe Illustrator and AutoCAD to design graphics and cover images. I have also learnt about the design process and the challenges that come with working on large scale projects. This included knowledge of the opportunities and constraints a site can provide, and understanding how to analyse a site.
Responsibilities
I have been given a lot of creative freedom when assisting on design projects. It gave me the opportunity to test my knowledge and skills before then discussing with the team and receiving informal feedback. I have been given freedom to work on projects, while also knowing there are people to help and give advice.
Support & Guidance
I have worked in a team so there is always an opportunity to ask questions as I work. I had an informal mid-placement review with my line manager which was an opportunity to ask questions about the company, team, projects and the graduate programme that is available. I also had online meetings with members of other offices to discuss specific skills and digital techniques.
Culture
The team were very friendly and welcoming, answering my questions and including me in meetings. I have been part of a small team in a wider network so I had the opportunity to visit other offices. Collaboration is a big part of the design process so I was able to work on several projects with different people.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement and it has made be excited to join this field once I graduate. I applied to this placement as it was an opportunity to experience the industry. Throughout the month I had the opportunity to work in other departments (planning and architecture), furthering my experience of the wider industry.
Yes
When joining the urban design team everyone works on several projects at once so there are many opportunities to join in and experience all areas of the job. This can range from finalising visual documents, working in the early stages of a project mapping the site, or responding to feedback from a client. Having a good understanding of design tools helps but there is also the opportunity to learn from the team in a collaborative working environment.
