    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Daily tasks involve interaction with external media consultancies, monitoring coverage of the firm, and responding to the EMEA Marketing team's ad hoc requests. These can involve drafting up content for social media, liaising with intra-firm teams, or working on strategy decks for presentations. Smaller projects tend to last 1 - 2 weeks, with overarching projects being set at the start of the internship that last for 10 weeks. These involve collaborating with the other marketing interns in New York to compile decks such as a Social Competitive Analysis, placing Jefferies against other investment banks.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Communication has been a central skill that the internship has helped me develop through the internal and external interactions required on a daily basis, as PR is integral to the functionality of the EMEA team. The longer term projects have also developed my understanding of social media's usage in a corporate context, comparing how different firms use Instagram, LinkedIn, and X. More generally, my skillset using Word, Excel and PowerPoint has also improved, with each platform being used everyday (we also received a week long training course for Excel at the start of the internship).

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • With Marketing being a relatively small team, a lot of the projects that I was set were completed on an independent basis - this involved being trusted to reach out to senior people across the firm via email. Overall, I feel that the responsibility I was given during the internship was ideal, being given the freedom to independently complete tasks but consistently being told that I could reach out to my team if I required any assistance.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There were various levels of support available to me from the start of the internship - the broader internship scheme meant that HR were significantly involved in the week-by-week events of the internship and we had direct access to contacting them. My team, however, provided the most guidance over the course of the internship, as I had the ability to ask them immediate questions on a daily basis. This made completing independent tasks a lot less daunting, knowing that I could ask for support when I needed it.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Whilst doing the internship, Jefferies makes a real effort to integrate the interns into the broader company culture. As interns, we were invited to the various Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion talks, panels, and lunches that showed us the different Employee Support Groups that existed within the company. Outside of these groups, the general atmosphere of the firm was also really welcoming, with there being various after work events available that made meeting co-workers in a more social environment easier.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The strong company culture, independent projects, and supportive team made my internship a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Being able to ask honest questions about the types of work my team completed, their career trajectories, and their current roles has provided an illuminating perspective on a potential future career. The work itself, and the internal and external interactions it involves, have also provided enjoyable experiences on a daily basis. Together, these factors have provided a really enjoyable internship experience.

  • 7. Would you recommend Jefferies International to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Jefferies International
  • In terms of applications, I remember mine involving a CV (no cover letter), a psychometric test and two interviews. With my CV, since there was no cover letter, I ensured that certain elements of it were geared towards a marketing role. Then, with the two interviews, I revised answering more general interview questions, and, (most importantly) thought about how marketing and PR would function within an Investment Bank, looking at Jefferies brand image and how it compares itself to other firms.
