Overview
Work was project based so this could vary quite a lot, when in the office day to day would involve tasks such as report writing, using excel to perform calculations, using acoustic modelling software or preparing for site visits by writing risk assessments and gathering kit. Often I would be out on site so these days varied a lot as I could be anywhere performing a number of tasks.
Skills
Yes I have learnt many skills whilst at Arup, both transferrable skills to take into any future professions and much more specialist technical skills too. For example I have greatly improved my organisational skills as I am responsible for managing my own time and what projects I spend it on to make sure everything that needs doing gets done. Additionally, I came in with little technical knowledge and have developed that throughout by utilising countless training opportunities.
Responsibilities
I was given plenty of responsibility, with support given during the early weeks as I got to grips with what was expected of me, however past this point I was then left to handle my own workload and complete tasks as they were given to me. Support was available if needed but I was to seek that out myself and was treated exactly as a normal graduate would have been treated.
Support & Guidance
Throughout my placement I received a good amount of support, with it always being there if needed. However, I was not micro-managed and was trusted that if I hadn't asked for support then I was comfortable to get on with the work alone. This allowed for me to target areas where I felt needed support and could then improve on and not waste time in the areas I felt comfortable working in.
Culture
Working at Arup I always felt welcomed and respected. All employees are always happy to help and will never turn you away or be rude. Everyone is friendly and it is a lovely atmosphere to work in.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement experience at Arup. Not only was the work I was doing interesting, rewarding and meaningful but the people I met throughout the company were one of the best parts of the experience.

Be prepared to be challenged, you are given everything you need to succeed and to enjoy your placement as long as you are confident enough to admit when you need assistance.
