Overview
At Arcadis, my role as a student engineer involves engaging in various tasks and responsibilities on a daily basis. Some of the key aspects of my role and daily tasks include: Assisting associate technical directors in their daily activities. Learning and utilizing design software such as AutoCAD and civil3d for project work. Engaging in discussions with professionals across different levels and disciplines to comprehend various business functions and collaborative efforts. Developing and honing communication skills to effectively work in a diverse and often remote working setup. Receiving guidance and mentorship from colleagues like my buddy and line manager for continuous personal and professional growth. Contributing to projects like 'What Makes Good Design' to shape Arcadis' legacy and enhance operational processes.
Skills
During my time at Arcadis, I have had the opportunity to acquire new skills and further develop existing ones. Some of the skills I have gained or enhanced include: Technical Skills: I have developed proficiency in using design software like AutoCAD and civil3d, which has strengthened my technical capabilities in engineering design. Communication Skills: Engaging with professionals across different roles has improved my communication skills, allowing me to effectively convey ideas and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams. Teamwork: Working in a diverse environment has enhanced my ability to collaborate with team members effectively, even in remote or hybrid working setups. Problem-Solving: Being involved in projects like 'What Makes Good Design' has sharpened my problem-solving skills, enabling me to approach challenges creatively and strategically. Mentorship and Guidance: Through interactions with mentors and colleagues, I have learned the importance of mentorship and guidance in personal and professional development, nurturing my abilities to guide and support others in the future.
Responsibilities
As it was my first industry specific job a great balance was struck between managing my own responsibility and having the freedom to ask questions whenever I needed.
Support & Guidance
At Arcadis you are assigned a buddy as well as a line manager (Usually someone a role or 2 above yours in the business), this is a great concept as they can guide you through everything in role and help you develop your skills.
Culture
A larger part of the team work remotely for the majority of the week as this is an option for all employees, however the atmosphere in the office when you do go in is usually really uplifting and helpful especially to those just starting out.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and felt that the experience filled me with confidence about my career path and a potential to join Arcadis after University in a permanent role. This belief that Arcadis reciprocated in me made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Yes
Internships are mostly what you make of it. If successful in your initial application, show the determination and willingness to learn and present a plan for yourself and your career. This way the you can also measure the extent to which the company is willing to help you get there. Forming this relationship only accelerates your learning. Always remain curious.
