Overview
Average typical working hours: 9-5:30pm At the start of the day, there's meetings to go over what we did recently, what we need help on, etc. Then, you just work on your project independently, with support from mentors, people in your team or outside your team, etc. After that, there's usually a coffee chat with someone in the firm to learn about what they are doing or their career pathway. Lunch is normally with the other interns or with the team or by yourself.
Skills
Yes, definitely. Full stack web development, full development cycle, including gathering requirements, user interviewing, testing and delivering. Also, data engineering and analysis using new technology stack or new tools. For example, Visual Studio, Source Tree, Power BI. There' also transferrable skills e.g. skills like communication, leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking, problem solving, presenting, how to approach a person for a coffee chat or a work shadowing session, how to start a conversation smoothly, etc.
Responsibilities
I was given two separate projects which targeted different skill sets. They were both end-to-end projects that are possible to be completed within the given time frame. I have full responsibility of the two projects and they are ones that have actual benefit to the company, especially my team and the teams that we support within the business. I would say we were given a decent amount of responsibility which would not give us too much pressure.
Support & Guidance
During my summer internship in London, I received a lot of support and guidance throughout. I had a mentor and a buddy who take care of me during the internship and check up on me regularly, offering advice and suggestions to me. As the firm is not that big, people are quite busy but they are also willing to give up their time to talk to you, to help you and guide you when needed.
Culture
I would say the company culture and the general atmosphere is very friendly, supportive and delightful. Due to the flat structure, you could easily talk to anybody. For example, SVP, VP, Analyst, Associate, MD, etc. They are very welcoming and happy to spend some time with you. I was able to talk to various people from the firm and even work shadowed multiple people from different teams (including front office, middle office and back office)
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship a lot as I was able to learn numerous skills as mentioned earlier and the company culture is very friendly which allowed me to get to know different people easily. Also, knowing that my project has an actual impact and benefit to the firm shows that there is a purpose and meaning to my internship. The other interns were also super nice. There were a lot of opportunities to socialize with them.
Yes
My advice for other people who would like to apply to Jefferies International is to learn about the company and its culture, values, missions, opportunities as well as its products and services. Practice and make sure you are happy with your mathematical and programming skills if you would like get the most out of your experience in Jefferies International. I would say also read the news, read Financial Times, and be prepared for any questions.
