BMS Summer Intern Review

Day to day role was to research into the diversification of governance services that the business can venture into. This includes surfing the internet, reading reports, having meetings all to gain market information. I then undertook 3 presentations explaining to colleagues of the findings and how we can venture into this business.

Yes I have developed skills on how to undertake market research more efficiently, developed my presentation skills, improved my workplace communication and learnt how meeting minutes are formatted and structured.

Yes, the responsibility was very high. As I was undertaking a market research project where only a small handful of employees knew the area where I was researching, the findings that I would find are vital for the business. These can now be used by future employees who want information on this industry. I also had to present 3 times, and one of the times I travelled down to London to present in person to a partner of the company.

The support for the research project wasn't extremely high. As not many people in the company knew about what I was researching, they could not help. There was a basic brief that suggested what I should research into, but this was very basic and didn't give recommendations on where I could find this research. Overall, this was a very independent task, and the support wasn't very high for the task.

Company culture and general atmosphere is great. Everyone is really friendly and will go out their way to talk to you. Went out for lunch multiple times with the team and had a football competition between the offices around the UK.

Overall I have enjoyed my 8 week summer placement. The placement was not what I expected and different to what was advertised when I applied however I have still enjoyed it. The team was very friendly and also went out their way to help, however sometimes the work became tedious as I was only focusing on one task for the entire 8 weeks. However it allowed me to develop different ways of staying motivated and overall I have enjoyed my time.

Make sure to find out as much information as possible about the business area you're applying to and what you will be doing during your placement. Go out your way to speak to people as everyone is so friendly and go to team/company events if you have the opportunity to.
