Overview
I was in the commercial valuations team so I went on quite a few inspections of properties and subsequently helped form a report for each. This included doing the location and situation (context of a property), comparables and looking at tenant covenant strength. There were also some intern calls and networking events for us to attend
Skills
Better understanding of softwares and databases used in the department such as CoStar, Loopnet, Rightmove Plus etc. Also learnt what makes a comparable more appropriate to use than others, and what sort of things to look out for and ask about when out on site visits
Responsibilities
Yes. I was left to do significant parts of the reports myself, especially as it is just the same jobs over and over, I was given the same responsibilities for most of the reports
Support & Guidance
The whole team was nice and also very helpful. I was also given a line manager who was great at explaining everything and constantly checking up on me, making sure I had work to do. The careers team were nice too
Culture
I was put in the City office in Finsbury Circus. It was nice to be there for a change of scene however the office was weirdly quiet, felt like I couldn't really talk so made it more intimidating to ask questions. There is basically only the valuations department and a few other teams there as well, so for an intern was not as good as being in the main office which would have been busier, with more things going on, being able to see the other interns and with all the other teams
Your Impressions
I found it hard because I was put in a department I did not want to do and doing the internship has confirmed that for me, however I do like the few interns that are in my office. It is nice to be able to hang out with them at lunch times. I was in valuation and I found the job boring and repetitive but I was trying not to let that cloud my judgement of the placement overall.
No
It is a decent scheme but I feel not as well organised as the other one I did, plus all the intern department talks are online, not in person. And I get that they do this so that the interns in the regional office can join in, however it made the internship so much less social and engaging
