Overview
My role as an intern was a simplified version of the regular actuarial work that my colleagues in the office worked on. I completed basic member calculations for pension schemes initially and then as time moved on these became increasingly complex. I also worked on longer term development projects whether that is with the New Business team, Pensions Technical Unit team, Development team etc. and finally I had chance to draft emails for clients
Skills
Learnt lots of actuarial skills in-particular whilst also developing lots of soft skills to a great extent
Responsibilities
I was given lots of responsibility from day 1, although all work goes through checks and reviews, I was able to work on large pension schemes from my first day and the team placed trust in me to do this. If I took on work and made mistakes, these were clearly explained to me so I could learn from them.
Support & Guidance
Lots of support and guidence given whether it was centrally through training and follow up sessions or having regular catch ups with my 'buddy' in the office and looking through work I'd completed
Culture
Very enjoyable atmosphere, expected it to be what you imagine offices to be like in finance jobs but instead it was relaxed and everyone speaks to each other so you settle in quickly
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship
Yes
Try to show you have varied experiences and interests when applying and then when you get to an interview or assessment centre you can show what you know about the role and company and why you'd like to join. Confidence is key when going into interviews, the company is looking for people who they believe will be a good fit in their office and who will be easy to communicate with
