Overview
A really enjoyable experience working as a retail intern for 10 weeks at Tesco. I was able to develop leadership skills quickly, managing store colleagues from the get go. There were some amazing development and networking opportunities provided both within the office and the retail space; everyone was super supportive of my personal development. There was definitely a need to operate independently to be successful but this was great for increasing confidence and for experience working self-sufficiently.
Skills
Leadership and interpersonal skills were probably the main thing that retail interns are able to learn and develop. Tesco also do a good job of giving you exposure to other elements of the business and growing your network both within and outside of the retail business
Responsibilities
Given responsibility for colleagues from the outset and this only increased over the 10 weeks as you were trained as a shift leader. You are given a lot of trust and independence as an intern. I would also add that they give a clear trajectory of what independence and responsibility they expect you to have should you get a graduate offer.
Support & Guidance
Lots from your store manager to whom you are assigned and other more local senior colleagues. Less from head office
Culture
Really positive. Everyone was super happy to help and offer advice. Networking opportunities were large.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would definitely return.
