Overview
Attending squad ceremonies within the Agile framework to keep the squad updated on my projects and alert them to any issues. Bi-weekly 121s with my line manager to review my progress on my personal project and development of skills in the business. Regular activities for the interns to develop skills such as presenting and problem solving, including a day long hackathon and speaker sessions from leadership. Visiting stores and fulfilment centres to gain a well rounded view of the business and its operations.
Skills
I'd never had an office job previously so many of the skills I learnt were related to working in a corporate environment. Networking was a vita skill I learnt, I had no experience before and wasn't sure in what to get out of it, however with firm support from my team and mentor and ample opportunities to practice it. Project management was the main skill practiced throughout the internship, I was given a 2 projects to complete over the course of the internship which I took full responsibility for.
Responsibilities
I was given full responsibility to carry out 2 projects over the course on the internship, which required me to independently network to gain information from different areas of the business and analyse information to come to an informed decision. I was tasked with reviewing an area of the business which was assumed to be unprofitable to make a recommendation on what to do with it, which involved analysing financial information as well as insights into customer behaviour.
Support & Guidance
I was always welcome and encouraged to reach out to my line manager or members of my squad via MS Teams, email or in person if in the office. All of whom would never have enough time to help or support me with what I needed. Furthermore, people from higher up the hierarchy often took interest in my work and offered advice to me.
Culture
Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, I always felt included and welcome and everyone I spoke to was always happy to arrange time to talk about their roles and give advice. You never really felt like there was a hierarchy.
Your Impressions
I had a great time, I didn't really know what to expect going other than I was working in the online function of the business, so it was I was not able to know what exact work I'd be doing, however due to the level of care and attention I recieved form my squad I never felt like I didn't know what to do.
Yes
Just to be yourself when applying and show that you're full of unique ideas. They tend to look more for someone who can think creatively and work well in a team rather than having years of skills and knoledge.
