Overview
My role involves overseeing and organising the design process of an intern project, so beginning with doing the initial desk research all the way through to creating the wireframes and conducting user research and testing.
Skills
I have developed my skills in Figma and have learned more about the role of a UI/UX designer, in particular working alongside Devs. I enjoyed learning more about project management and also working directly with clients.
Responsibilities
Since we were on a project that was full of interns, both design and developer interns, I would say yes, we were giving a lot of responsibility.
Support & Guidance
There were regular mentor sessions, as well as all the other staff being very supportive and there to help despite them not being directly involved with the internship programme. I reached out to some members of staff whose roles I wanted to know more about and they also indulged me so I felt very well supported and received a lot of guidance.
Culture
The company culture was very positive, i felt very relaxed in the office and everyone was friendly and easy to get to know, especially with all of the company events taking place that also gave opportunities to get to know your colleagues. I wasn't treated as a "temporary" employee or less than, but rather it felt like somewhere I had been working for a long time.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it to a good extent, I felt that it was a good opportunity to get to know more about working as a designer in the software industry and helped me learn more about UX design as well.
Yes
I would recommend people to be open and honest, and focus on what they want to get out of the internship. Yes, there is a potential job offer at the end of the internship, but this is not a company where you can display toxic traits like competitiveness and one-upping. Focus on your own goals and how the company can support you to reach them, and work hard!
