Overview
My role consists of me attending meeting with my team or other project teams, often with me presenting data that I have generated and analysed. The main part of my role involves lab work, generating data to then be analysed to produce accurate results
Skills
This placement has given me the opportunity to develop many new skills, both in the lab, and outside. In the lab I have learnt so much more than I would've in a traditional uni environment, both in my specific field as well as more transferrable lab skills. Outside I have learnt how to do in depth data analysis, with opportunities provided to expand further. Additionally, soft skills like presenting have developed.
Responsibilities
As I was learning new techniques, there was little responsibility, but once I was competent, I was given significant responsibility. I was given power over my project, able to see it from preparation to data analysis, and the opportunity to try and fix any mistakes independently before involving my supervisors.
Support & Guidance
I received so much support during my placement. This was primarily through my supervisors, who helped and guided me through all of my training and my project. We had weekly meetings to go over my progress and any problems I had, and they were willing to help in any way they could.
Culture
The company culture was very corporate, as is expected from such a large company. The general culture around the office was very positive, and the building fosters connections outside of the team, with people open and willing for interaction.
Your Impressions
I have immensely enjoyed my placement. The people that I have met in my team have made an incredible impact on me. This year has changed the path I was following in my future, and I am incredibly grateful to my team for making this year as good as it has been.
Yes
I would suggest doing your research before the interview, both scientifically and on the company, to make sure it is something that you want to do. If you gain a position, I would advise taking advantage of it, by interacting with as many people as possible and utilising any opportunity that is available. I would also advise to not be disheartened if you don't get other placements.
