Overview
I would either go into the office or work remote from home on my laptop. I would work independently on various tasks as assigned by people on my team. This included writing reports, being a second on a few site visits (survey work) and some admin for the team/
Skills
I have developed my abilities to time manage and work in an office. I have also gained a better understanding of what working in ecology for a consultancy entails, there have been opportunities to express what I am interested in learning and pursue it to some extent.
Responsibilities
Yes, I have been given the chance to work on several pieces of work that hold an associated level of responsibility such as a bid for work and a few memos to clients
Support & Guidance
There was alot of support, but also a certain level of personal responsibility, so people were willing to help and take time to answer questions but I had to pursue it. Arcadis has alot of flexibility in working so I was not micro managed at all and I had to track down answers if I wanted them. I personally enjoyed this, but this structure may not be for everyone
Culture
The culture is friendly and supportive. Arcadis likes to call themselves a "people first" company and the people who work there for the most part definitely live up to this. The people are friendly and helpful, it is still a typical office job and so it still has the professional and overall vibe of one
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the internship, I think overall it was good for my personal and professional development. That being said there were some rough patches, I struggled at times with work load and had to be firmer when turning down some bits of work, the pay is also slightly lower than competeing companies but Arcadis does have a slightly shorter work week (37.5 hours)
Yes
Communicate with the people around you, do not just wait for them to come to you. The work is there if you can find it and there will be someone willing to talk you through it or to point you in the direction of someone who can. This is a good opportunity but you need to make the most of it.
