Overview
I engaged in consulting projects for issuers and financial institutions in the UK & Ireland region. I did this by collaborating with a team of consultants and data scientists to provide strategic business recommendations based on market and data analysis.
Skills
During my internship, I developed a robust consulting toolkit, including the ability to effectively use PowerPoint and Excel to convey information, present deliverables logically and concisely in client meetings, and organize strategies into distinct groups or concepts to tell a clear and compelling storyline.
Responsibilities
I was given significant responsibility during my internship, often creating underlying methodologies and deliverables that were directly presented to clients.
Support & Guidance
I received significant support during my internship. I was paired with a graduate consultant as my buddy, who offered advice and support through weekly check-ins. Additionally, I met with my manager 2-3 times per week to update them on my project work and receive guidance for continuous improvement. The People (HR) team was also available to address any questions from interns.
Culture
Although the stigma relating to consulting culture is highly intense and stressful, this internship was the opposite. Being within Visa, a technology company, the culture was heavily centered around maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The Visa Consulting & Analytics team was all-around extremely friendly and welcoming.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship at Visa this summer. I had ample opportunities to connect with the ~20 other London-based interns, colleagues from different teams, and senior executives, all of which I found valuable. There were also numerous intern events focused on learning and skill development, which will benefit me in the long term.
Yes
Learn the basics about the payments industry before you apply, including how the 4-party model works and how each party makes money (for example, what are interchange fees and to whom do they apply?). Also, if you make it to the Case Study interview, make sure to not only make visually appealing slides, but also tell a meaningful storyline that can be easily followed and incorporates the given data.
