    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The general workflow involves working on your assigned ticket (small work task) which involves writing new code, modifying existing code or investigating an unknown with respect to the project. As other interns finish their tickets, peer reviewing their code also makes up part of the day to day work. Your code will also be reviewed so some time is also spent responding to comments and making changes to your own code.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learnt how to use React - something I had never used before. More generally, my coding style has also improved as I focused on making my code simpler and more readable. I have also greatly improved my skills and confidence with git. I'm confident that my team working skills have also improved given that it was essential for our team of 11 (including designers) to work closely throughout the project.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • We were given the responsibility of reviewing each other's code (although it would then be further reviewed by our intern trainers). This was a good opportunity to explore how best to give constructive feedback. We also had to present directly to the client, and create the presentation ourselves. Furthermore, we took turns leading meetings such as team standup every day and our end of week retrospective meeting.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had two intern trainers with whom I had one-on-one catch ups every week. In these I received feedback about what was going well and things I could improve on. The internship started with a 2 week bootcamp which helped the team get up to speed with the tech stack we would be using for the project. This meant that I felt comfortable when the project started. I was also assigned a mentor who I caught up with every other week to discuss how things were going.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was very inclusive. There were several social events that all the interns were included in. Moreover, everyone seemed very happy to help each other and no question was too stupid. There was also an emphasis on work-life balance and the intern trainers would prompt people to stop working if it was lunch time or the end of the day. They also scheduled a tea break every day to give a short break in the afternoon.
