    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • 2 days a week are spent with the analytics department, doing training sessions on the financial world and learning how to use the Bloomberg terminal. The other 3 days are spent with the sale team. You call clients to pitch new functions, shadow client visits, or prospect for new clients. Interns are also given 4 different projects to complete as teams that bring together all of the terminal functionality and market concepts you've learned about.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have gained a basic knowledge of the Bloomberg terminal and its functionalities. I have also developed my existing skills in presentation, communication, task management, and project collaboration. I think this role also gives interns a high degree of exposure to direct communication with real clients, which is very helpful in developing professional communication skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Interns are given a good amount of responsibility. They are given a lot of independence in deciding how they would like to prioritize their time at the firm, in terms of what they'd like to learn about, who they'd like to network with, the additional projects they'd like to take on, etc. However, there is still a huge amount of support as each intern is assigned 4-5 different mentors across different departments.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There was a huge amount of support for interns. Each intern is assigned 4-5 different mentors across different departments who check in with them regularly and help them in both their day-to-day tasks and their long-term professional development goals. Additionally, everyone in the firm is extremely open to meeting the interns and giving them advice or guidance. All of the employees are also happy to have interns shadow them during the work day or on client visits.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture is extremely open and friendly. There is a strong sense of collaboration and camaraderie among employees. There is also much less of a strict hierarchy as compared to other firms. Horizontal movement in roles is seen quite often, with people even moving to completely different departments when they'd like to try a new role.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The internship was an extremely interesting and enjoyable program. Interns are treated very well, with many special events and team activities. I also really appreciated that interns were actively encouraged to reach out to anyone they might find interesting so they could continue developing skills in what they were passionate about. The other interns were very friendly and social, as were the full-time employees.

  • 7. Would you recommend Bloomberg to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Bloomberg
  • Take the time to properly understand Bloomberg's business and the specific role you are entering into. Some interns felt disappointed because they initially thought that Bloomberg was a finance company and that the internship could be a natural stepping stone to entering a bank. Also, there is no need to worry as much about technical skills. The training is very comprehensive at Bloomberg, and there is a lot of Bloomberg-specific knowledge that cannot be learned beforehand, so just focus on developing and showcasing your soft skills.
