Overview
The role is split half and half into analytics and sales. Analytics time is mostly spent in training, learning about the markets, marketplayers and how to use the Bloomberg Terminal. Sales time is much more hands on and mostly consists on assisting with client interaction.
Skills
I have surely developed new and existing skills as a result of going out of my comfort zone to interact with clients, learning about communication, relationship building, and objection handling.
Responsibilities
This will really depend according to department and team. In analytics, responsibility is quite low as it is mostly focused on training through classes and practical exercises. Sales however give interns much responsibility as they are able to initiate client interactions, besides the shadowing of salespeople. Thus, conducting product deployment and information campaigns is something interns are often asked to do without supervision.
Support & Guidance
Extreme support and guidance. All interns have on average 2 days of training weekly on the terminal and how to best use it according to the workflow. Moreover, guidance is plentiful during sales time thanks to the involvement of mentors, managers and even the people working in your assigned sales team.
Culture
The company culture is what really makes Bloomberg stand out. The hierarchy in the firm is pretty much horizontal, reaching out to anyone is possible and heavily encouraged. People are used to having coffee chats across roles and departments to gain a better understanding of what others do and collaboration is the norm here. Being an intern is like having a free pass to reaching out to almost anyone in any department, which is very helpful in gaining exposure and opportunities to shadow.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my time at Bloomberg, I believe it was a great opportunity to develop market/industry knowledge whilst growing my interpersonal skills and network.
Yes
Demonstrate your interest by doing market research and product research to show you are aware and passionate about the industry. Speaking multiple languages is almost a prerequisite.
