    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I have produced statistical analysis for many different clinical trials across AstraZeneca's early oncology portfolio, responding to internal information requests and to regulatory submissions. I have worked with statisticians producing internal standards regarding the derivation of a key safety metric and presented on my work to the senior leadership team.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • We underwent extensive training where we learned in detail how clinical trials are designed and operate, and about CDISC standards. I am certified in base programming in the SAS language. We had the opportunity to engage in many internal initiatives outside of what is expected of our roles.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The training for this placement is much more intensive than for others, and so there is a significant length of time before you are able to onboard to active study work. I was ultimately responsible for the production of outputs that fed into real clinical submissions, as much as any other full time programmer. I always felt comfortable asking my co-workers for advice.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The people I worked alongside are incredible, I feel they had a genuine interest in my professional and personal growth. My colleagues were more than happy to set time aside to talk through their work with me or help me with any queries I had.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • AstraZeneca has a number of groups dedicated to supporting people early in their careers such as AZInspire and the BIG group (specific to BioMetrics), these provide many opportunities for networking with peers. The internal site "Workplace" is similar to facebook and provides updates on company wide announcements but also has dedicated groups for whatever interests you may have, be it dog owners or running groups etc...
