Overview
The role is a lab based role that involves carrying out experiments using mainly flow cytometry. Following wet work, all data is analysed using analysis software such at FlowJo and Spotfire. Each day differs slightly as it depends on the stage of the experiment but each week usually involves a mixture of laboratory work, analysis and discussion around the data in team meetings.
Skills
I have learnt so many new skills, especially technical skills in the lab such as cell culture, flow cytometry and complex analysis skills in immunophenotyping. I have built on my team work skills through collaborative science in team meetings and large experiments. Through presenting in a range of meetings, I have developed my confidence and communication skills while learning how to deliver scientific information appropriately depending on the audience.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities increased as the year went on. Once I became confident in the lab, I was given experiments to carry out independently and completed my own write ups and analysis. I also helped out on key project experiments and took on jobs that other permanent team members were also doing. Even though I was given a large amount of responsibility, I was never left without guidance or support when I needed it.
Support & Guidance
Throughout my placement year I was given incredible support and guidance, not only from my primary supervisors but also from other team members who were incredibly welcoming and offered their support continuously. I had weekly 1:1 meetings with my supervisor where I could go over any new experimental data as well as discuss any personal development ambitions and university work. If anything came up outside these meetings then my supervisor would arrange additional meetings. I was never without support and all the staff were extremely approachable and helpful.
Culture
The culture was welcoming and ambitious throughout my placement. I was always pushed the right amount and supported throughout. Everyone in my team looked out for each other and provided support and guidance when needed, while maintaining the GSK culture.
Your Impressions
This placement has been the best decision I ever made. I would never have achieved this level of technical lab skills and confidence with my undergraduate degree alone. The year has massively developed my skills and equipped me for the world of work in the future, while allowing me to better understand the career I want and what steps to take next. The people in my team have added so much to my placement, with their support and welcoming nature. I never felt out of place and felt like a crucial team member all year.
