    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • During my placement, I was responsible for liaising with design teams and internal disciplines to successfully coordinate deliverables and design reports. In addition to presenting in weekly Design Team Meetings (DTMs) and specialized meetings, I contributed to bid preparation and slide deck creation. Technically, I worked dynamically across Rhinoceros 3D, Revit, Twinmotion, Enscape, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Suite to produce and deliver project materials for key reporting milestones, ensuring that all outputs met the required standards.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Through hands-on experience, I’ve been able to develop my technical skills and confidence. I’ve taken the initiative to produce both conceptual and technical designs that add value to projects and briefs. Specifically, my abilities in parametric design, rendering, and illustration have improved, enabling me to create graphic materials and toolkits that effectively support various projects. Otherwise, my soft skills and communicative ability has greatly improved, as my role has necessitated understanding and collaborating with designers and engineers with wide ranging backgrounds, on topics that are complex and nuanced.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was thrilled to have been so involved in projects, from the concept stage through to technical delivery. I had the opportunity to present deliverables to external clients, manage communications, and create marketing collateral across several core sectors and specialisms. This hands-on involvement gave me valuable insights into how the industry operates and how various roles contribute to project success, helping me identify potential career paths for the future. Internally, I gained exposure in areas I expressed interest in early on during my placement, such as site visits and software development. This culminated in me presenting to various disciplines and sector specialists at key milestones throughout the year, including end-of-quarter reviews, lessons learned sessions, and my placement conclusion.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received consistent support throughout my internship. With my RIBA accreditation requiring quarterly reflections and check-ins with a dedicated supervisor (separate from my line manager), I was able to articulate my professional ambitions and expand my network. My line manager was equally supportive, connecting me with Human Resources staff, partners, and sector leaders, who provided invaluable advice and insights into the current state of the built environment and future industry trends. I truly appreciate having access to such candid and insightful perspectives at this formative stage in my career, and I’m certain their guidance will influence my post-graduate decisions.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Once I settled into my role, I became familiar with the office culture and social groups, including Cake Club, Run Club, Cycling Club, and the Young Employees Forum (YEF). The YEF, led by graduates and engineers passionate about the built environment, hosts monthly socials that are fantastic icebreakers and a great way to meet colleagues across disciplines. One of my highlights was joining the YEF ski trip to Val Thorens in the spring—a fantastic experience with great company. Additionally, the office regularly holds drop-in talks and "lunch & learns," offering both a break from project work and an opportunity to explore new topics. Buro Happold also hosts a programme of talks from external industry leaders, with dual delivery (in-person and online), ensuring they are accessible whether working in the office or remotely.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, largely because I actively engaged both socially and professionally. This kept me busy and ensured that no two days were the same, as I constantly worked on new and exciting projects. I felt incredibly fortunate to contribute to innovative, pioneering schemes, and having my work included in packages alongside that of architects I admire was deeply rewarding. It was fulfilling to know that I had a positive impact on the project teams I was part of.
