    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working with different members of the structural team on the projects they are working on. Work can vary in difficulty and vary in task, but you will always be briefed and get help whenever needed. It is always known that your are a university student with limited knowledge.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Lots of skills can be gained being around the team. Primarily structural engineering knowledge will be built upon from university through design and loading effects. Software is a primary tool in everyday work time. This includes using member design, PDF sketching, communication or computational design tools, all of which you get exposure to while working on live projects.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • High amounts of responsibilty is given because you are given tasks for real life projects, which is a lot different from "fake" projects designed in university. By completing these tasks, you are contributing necessary documents to the overall projects, which could be a large project. However, the pressure that comes with the responsibility is low, given all the support from the engineer that supervises you and the help you can request.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots of support and guidance is given because it's known that you are university student with limited knowledge from university, as long as you are willing to learn and get stuck in, then the support will be very beneficial. Not only will your line manager support you with everything you do and check up on you from time to time, but the rest of the team can help you if you ask them.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was amazing, everyone in the team is super friendly and welcoming, although it can be intimidating first stepping into the office, younger engineers within then team will help ease you in and introduce you to others in the team, so it's less awkward. More senior engineers aren't hard to talk to either, just engage in conversation and they will ave a conversation with you whether it's work related or not.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The placement was very enjoyable. The friendly team atmosphere but professional atmosphere motivates you to do your best, but there's no judgement or lack of support from others, everyone helps each other in learning and development. There was lots to learn with multiple team members as long as you are engaged and willing. If there are things you really want to learn, your line manager can help you find that work.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Buro Happold
  • Be very enthusiastic about the role you're applying for, show your interests with whatever work you've done that seems applicable. There's no need to have prior work experience as long as you are actually willing to learn and get stuck in and you can get that message across to your interviewers. The interview itself is quite relaxed so be yourself and demonstrate your interests well.
