    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Tax Analyst in Private Client services. Consistently delivered on tax computations, cash flow amendments, tax projections and tax returns, while conducting legislative research used for direct client advice. I contributed to client calls and delivered on client assignments with tight deadlines, maintaining client relationships and upholding Deloitte’s reputation.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Developed my insight into a commercial professional services environment. In depth insight into client interaction. Strong oversight into both compliance and advisory work, and the differences between the two. Built on my pre-established legal analysis skills drawn from my law degree.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, significant responsibility. I was lucky enough to be the only intern in Bristol's PCS team, meaning all the work went through me. I was proactive in looking for work and I was constantly busy. I had responsibility over tax computations, cash flow amendments, tax projections and tax returns, as well as legislative research. I had even greater responsibility in co-leading 2 internal business development projects for a team of directors and partners, helping to secure future clients.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A perfect amount. I had a people lead, who I set goals with, and who I would constantly check in with throughout the placement. I received in depth feedback from all the colleagues I worked with and everyone was incredibly approachable/receptive to any questions or queries I'd have.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Incredibly friendly but also competent and focussed. The perfect blend of personal and professional. There was an unspoken expectation to get the work done and so there was no need to push anyone or put pressure on anyone. Given that Deloitte are the premier global professional services organisation, you're expected to deliver, so no energy is expected to be expensed in pushing you to get work done on time - that's on you - instead the focus was more maintaining a healthy work environment and I loved that. I focussed on my work, but I loved the environment and the company I had.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
  • Take your time and be methodical on the online application. Don't rush. Prepare thoroughly for the interview. Prepare for competency based questions in your chosen practice area and questions on how well suited you are to the culture of the team and Deloitte. Understand the culture of the firm and why you want Deloitte before you even apply, because you can't fake a real interest in the firm. You have to be genuinely passionate about joining Deloitte, and as long as you articulate your reasons well and you're authentic in your answers, the interviewer will notice and it will pay off.
