    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Perform materials testing and analysis (thermal, mechanical, rheology and chemical techniques).  Advise on chemical hazards and provide support with COSHH assessments.  Develop epoxy formulations according to project needs.  Perform trials on new materials, including pilot tests.  Write reports on findings and present these to projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Since being at STFC, I have learnt lots about the chemistry and formulation of resins and applying the knowledge gained from my degree to industry has been rewarding. I have been able to practice my presenting skills at conferences and meetings and attended many trainings to develop other soft skills. My management have been very flexible in allowing me learn new skills in the laboratory and I have the ability to do more of the things I enjoy.

  • I feel I have been given adequate responsibility in my role and have always had a very open discussion with my line manager if I believe I need more responsibilities.

  • There are a lot of mentoring schemes in place and the graduate team work really hard to check in on you regularly. They are eager to help you out if you have any problem with your work or can help navigate you towards the relevant people.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone is super friendly and very passionate about their work. The Early Careers Network organise lots of networking events in order to help graduates/placement students settle in and also learn about each others work.

  • Ask lots of questions in the interview process and if you can ask for a site tour when you are being interviewed even if you are online. STFC are quite a niche company so before you apply make sure you understand what we do from online research.
