    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a software intern I would attend team meetings in the morning and afternoon. I would then use those meetings to plan out what tickets I would be working on, who I may be working with and any other calendar event that we may need to plan/account for.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learned how to work in an agile-based team. I have learned how to structure programs according to industry standards. I have learned how to program according to SOLID principles. I have also learned how to navigate through legacy code. I have also built up my leadership skills, verbal and written communication skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My responsibility increased through the internship. Initially I knew that I would spend most of my time learning about the codebase. My manager agreed with this so I spent the early part of my internship with little responsibility. I then had the opportunity to collaborate with other developers where my responsibility increased as I actively worked on tickets. Nearing the end of my internship, I tried and was given the opportunity to work individually on tickets which meant I had a lot more responsibility. I feel this was an ideal way of working for me but was assured by my manager that this was flexible and could vary if it did not work for me.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was supported throughout the internship, mainly by manager, followed by my team and other members of the company. I took part in workshops that supported my understanding of the codebase but was actively encouraged to ask questions during the internship so that I could better understand concepts that were being conveyed.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture and atmosphere was amazing. I felt that there was a big emphasis on learning, supporting others and making the workspace a positive place to be. As someone who is quite nervous, I felt like a member of the company from day one and that was a welcome surprise.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Redgate
  • Redgate prides itself on being a positive place to work, but that can only happen if you are part of it. Familiarize yourself with Redgate's values (found on their website), the job role and its expectations and see how well you align to them and what you can do if you don't. It is also important to show that you are learning (whether that be through projects that you are doing as part of a degree or externally) as Redgate has a culture that promotes learning and personal development.
