Overview
My day-to-day role would be working on my PDCA project and conducting meetings with my managers and colleagues to learn more about the department (Customer and Network Support). I would also shadow my colleagues to learn more about what they do. Even though this is what I did daily, there was also some spontaneity about my day. I would look in my calendar for the upcoming week and find fun charity events to get involved in or a whole department meeting where we would discuss what's going on and what the future holds. I really loved that spontaneity because it made every day different.
Skills
I have most definitely learnt new skills. The PDCA format (Plan Do Check Act) taught me how to structure projects, and the amazing thing about it is that it's versatile. You can literally use it for anything - from planning an essay to forming a new exercise habit. It may not be a skill, but I also learnt how to conduct myself in the workplace. This was my first time in the corporate world, and Toyota's work environment was a great way to know how the corporate world works. I also developed my existing skills. My presentation skills have definitely strengthened through working at Toyota. I've learnt about how to boost my confidence; how to channel my nerves into something positive; how to talk with purpose. And the development of my presentation skills shone when presenting my project in front of people. The way my project was designed helped me strengthen my data synthesis skills and critical thinking - skills that are imperative in any sector of work. This internship also helped me develop myself personally. The working environment and the way colleagues encouraged me during my internship really helped me believe in myself, overcome doubts and be myself!
Responsibilities
Yes I was! For example, during my project, I was allowed to design my presentation how I wanted to, which was amazing because it allowed my creative juices to flow. I could organise meetings by myself also. One thing I would say is don't be too independent! If you need help with something, don't be afraid to ask.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support, from everyone - from my colleagues to the directors! There's no silo at Toyota, so you feel comfortable going to anyone for help, and they are more than happy to!
Culture
The culture was very encouraging and welcoming. They didn't treat me like an intern; they treated me like I had been working there for ages! Toyota is all about kaizen, which translates to 'continuous improvement' and you can see that in the workplace. If something of yours needs improving, they will tell you, but never in a demeaning or negative way but in a motivating way. The workplace environment is so relaxed; I never felt stressed when doing my work.
Your Impressions
I loved my internship! It was genuinely the highlight of my summer. I've seen firsthand the reason why Toyota was rated one of the best companies to work for. I would highly highly recommend working here.
Yes
In the interview, be yourself! And make sure you research Toyota beforehand, especially their company culture, as it is central in the workplace. Use the STAR technique also when in interviews; it keeps your answer short and succinct but also answers the question perfectly.
