Overview
Structural Engineers are part of the design process of new car components. The role involves using FEA to optimise parts, making them as light as possible. This is a vital to allow the car to be competitive on track.
Skills
I have learnt a vast number of new skills, as well as developing existing ones. I have learnt how to use FEA software, as well as how to calculate the stresses and strains in a component by hand. Working closely with Design Engineers has also helped me to develop my social and teamwork skills.
Responsibilities
From the second week of my placement, I was given car components to work on. This meant that I was given a huge amount of responsibility, being responsible for making sure the components were structurally sound. However, I was always given sufficient help when required.
Support & Guidance
I was given work that would challenge me to do my best, but was always given help and support when I needed it.
Culture
The working atmosphere was very good and allowed me to thrive. There was a big push for continuous improvement to enable the team to move forward.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement as I was allowed to do meaningful work and contribute to the design of Williams F1 cars.
