    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role is desktop based working on a hybrid pattern of 2 days in the office. Daily use of QGIS for geospatial analysis and presentation. Report writing is very common, especially in early days.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my skills and base understanding of GIS. I have spent lots of time understanding what is required from developments regarding planning permissions and government guidance both in the UK and abroad. I have strengthened my skills in structuring and writing clear and coherent reports whilst presenting data and findings in a clear manner.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was surprised with how much the team trusted me to carry out tasks by myself, allowing me to actively learn skills required for the role. I was able to complete two projects largely by myself during my time at Buro Happold, with little advice and guidance from colleagues.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Colleagues were always available for assistance, and often checked in to see how my projects are coming along. I often like to ask many questions, and the whole team were very willing to answer and support wherever they could.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 5/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The Bath office was often very quiet, and due to the hybrid pattern, I’d usually only see a few colleagues throughout the week. However, the whole team are always accessible via Teams. I visited the London office which seemed more vibrant, with a higher proportion of younger colleagues. Everyone seemed very happy to work for Buro Happold, especially those in early careers. Generally a positive atmosphere.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Buro Happold
  • The only thing expected of me throughout this placement was that I was willing to learn and try my best. The interview process felt very relaxed, and was more about getting to know you personally and your attitude towards learning. The interview felt more like a conversation as I had come equipped with a few questions which made the process quite enjoyable.
