Overview
Standard engineer roles, surveying and setting out across site, checking drainage and column/slab drawings, snagging, quality checks, helping other Sisk workers across site with general tasks.
Skills
Further development of my problem solving skills as each day brings a new challenge, increased ability in reading drawings such as rebar, broader understanding of RC design, new general construction skills
Responsibilities
Before obtaining my CSCS card, my responsibility was limited however, once I passed the exam I quickly gained more responsibility involving completing surveys on my own and expected to do them to the correct standard. Overall I would say yes I was given a good amount of responsibility for the level I was working at.
Support & Guidance
I had plenty of support at the start of my internship where I shadowed other engineers and employees of Sisk, being shown the basics due to my lack of knowledge with construction and the site. Even once I continued to progress through my time at Sisk, everyone still looked out for me and gave me good guidance when I struggled and couldn't have done anything more to help me.
Culture
Everyone was friendly to me from the moment they introduced themselves to me, showing how genuine everyone was. Being out on site a lot, the atmosphere was enjoyable and frequently pleasant (when it wasn't raining). In the site office, there was always someone to chat to and have a laugh with, showing you could get along with anyone.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Sisk, with everyone making it constantly come across as a place you want to work at. Sisk have a core value of care and it really seems to be true from what I have experienced in my time here. The only thing people may not enjoy is early get up/start times but this is more than expected within this industry and is something you quickly become used to.
Yes
Have an idea before you start of what you want to get out of your time with Sisk, if you do this then you will have an enjoyable time. Furthermore, always be polite and positive towards colleagues and you will get the same actions back, which will make you enjoy your time as much as possible.
