Overview
I have been part of an agile scrum team, but working on my own project for the placement. I have spent much of my time designing and writing code, but have had lots of interactions both within and outside of my team in the context of my project. I also have attended all meetings (ceremonies) as part of the team.
Skills
Definitely - the programming is mostly C++ and I've felt like my confidence and ability in C++ has improved significantly. There's lots of exposure to software development technologies, e.g. version control and CI/CD. There's also a lot of CAM concepts and terminologies that I've picked up as a result of working on manufacturing problems!
Responsibilities
I was responsible for a single project over the summer, and was told by many different people that customers had been asking for this feature for a long time - this was motivating as I felt my work would have a significant impact.
Support & Guidance
Lots! I had a 'buddy' on the graduate scheme who could help with any general questions I had, as well as regular 1-2-1 meetings with my supervisor. However, all of my team were always happy to answer any questions, of which I had a lot throughout the summer.
Culture
The culture at Autodesk is very welcoming and friendly - you can reach out to basically anyone in the company and they'll be happy to point you in the right direction. The workload was never too high, there was never much pressure and the work hours were very reasonable - I always felt comfortable to find my feet and work at my own pace.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship - the work was interesting and meaningful, everyone was friendly and welcoming and I was pleased with how I performed.
Yes
Don't worry too much if you haven't done much programming before - there's lots of training and you will quickly improve. Having a fairly good maths/geometry can be useful for some of the placements, but there's such a wide variety of work that no matter your skills you will fit in somewhere.
