Overview
At Deloitte we spent sometime getting an insight into the company, what they specialise in and what makes them different. We got to know the different department, how to secure a grad role, how to construct a cv, etc.. On the second day, I sat in the tax department, and with my team we devised a presentation advising on tax for a company. Here I was able to use my leadership skills to allocate different roles to my team, and together we used our different expertise to construct the right advice for our client.
Skills
My technical knowledge on tax was enhanced. I got a greater understanding of tax laws and regulations, gaining insight into tax codes, laws and compliance procedures. This then proceeded to help my analytical skills such as problem solving. I was able to identify tax issues and find solutions to challenges. I completed financial analysis to understand the deductions and laws that applied, meanwhile identifying potential risks and opportunities for clients. In order to meet the deadline for the presentation, I also developed my time management skills to ensure organisation within the group.
Business Insight
My time with the company exposed me to Deloitte’s structure and operations. I was given an introduction to Deloitte’s various departments, including tax, audit and consulting. The way the departments work together to serve their clients and interacting with different employees was extremely informative and utilitarian in terms of deciding what I would grow and progress in. This was a very insightful experience, and despite being a student with a degree based less on these department, I learnt how to transfer my skills into these available positions to prosper. This was very useful in allowing me to decide what I would like to get into.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere was very professional. The company emphasised on work ethic in a healthy yet success-driven way, focusing on company excellence and delivery quality work to clients.
Your Impressions
To a large extent, I really enjoyed this insight. Gaining hand on hand experience and being exposed to a different work culture and atmosphere was really eye opening. Being able to meet and connect with people in the same boat as me as well as applying knowledge we shared and gained from each other broadened my understanding of potential career paths best suited for me.
Yes
I would like to put emphasis on confidence. Such insights and events can be nerve-racking, but the insight you gain here is unmatchable and exposure for a lot of students who what to get into this field is crucial for future success.
