Overview
You can work flexibly from home or the office between 7am and 7pm. You must work 8 hrs a day. My day consists of lots of independent work as well as meetings with my team and manager to ensure I know what I am doing. As well as this, pair programming and working directly with team mates is common.
Skills
Yes, my programming and technical skills have improved, much of it related to working in a real world environment on a large mature codebase. I have also had to present my progress and have developed/improved my presenting and communication skills in a professional environment.
Responsibilities
Yes, after learning the ropes, the work I was doing felt just as important as those of other full time colleagues. I was given responsibility over my work whilst still given the support I needed on areas I was struggling with.
Support & Guidance
I was given good support during especially during the start of the placement where I was trained thoroughly on the software and workflows used. Throughout the placement I have become more independent but am still given great support for all areas I am struggling with.
Culture
Company culture feels very official. There are socials for most teams and me and the other IPs have organised our own socials.
Your Impressions
I am enjoying my placement a lot. I have learned a lot about the industry and creating software in the real world. I have had opportunities to meet and get to know lots of other people and have been given good support by my team and line manager to ensure I succeed.
Yes
BAE Systems want to hire passionate engineers. During your interviews, ensure you know what you can about the company and are passionate about aerospace/computing/naval ships ect.
