    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am a Data Engineer and this involves working in the through life maintenance of different aircraft. I develop and load data modules into current engineering systems to provide support to export customers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt skills using Excel, VBA, different LSA toolsets, data engineering and modelling. I have developed skills in mathematical modelling, assumption based engineering, document processing and handling and coding.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I have been given a solo project to complete in order to aid my team and their database, involving a lot of personal responsibility. I have not been given much responsibility elsewhere.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My line managers and team have provided fantastic support and aid where appropriate and have been a pleasure to learn from. When they have not been around or have been busy it has been really difficult to continue working as this is a field I have not got much understanding in.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Felt very dated in the office and business sector I was in. My team were fantastic and good fun, but the office and atmosphere was not the best. As BAE is such a big company there are lots of opportunities to get involved within the graduate and undergraduate community elsewhere.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have enjoyed a lot of my placement, especially working on my project alongside my line manager. I have not enjoyed the downtime and feeling that my work isn't really making a difference.

  • Know exactly what field interests you and try to position yourself there. The newer and more exciting business opportunities where clear focus is being placed on is definitely the place to be and not existing and ageing platforms.
