Overview
Worked with team of dev/analyst interns on a project led by grad scheme colleagues Day to day responsibilities include - Writing code (mainly solo with some pair/mob programming) to resolve Jira tickets - Reviewing code written by others - Agile meetings, i.e. standups, sprint plan/retros - Design meetings - Deployment of code to cloud providers (AWS) - Huddle calls to discuss project progress/gain feedback with more senior colleagues - Attending insight events for career development - Other fun events (cookie baking)
Skills
In a technical sense: - Got to learn new frameworks I hadn't used before (Spring Boot) - Learned a lot about cloud deployment (big emphasis on this) - As well as refining things I knew (React) + learning ways to use them better In a soft skills sense my - Presenting skills were developed greatly - Collaboration skills (especially in a developer environment) were matured - Professionalism skills greatly improved
Responsibilities
Our project was fairly large so there was quite a bit of responsibility given as a result of working on that However there were opportunities to take on more responsibilities during the internship such as getting involved with different communities and events not related to our current work
Support & Guidance
Our project leads were super supportive and always gave quick responses to any messages we sent them Also (as mentioned before) we had huddle calls which gave us a lot of guidance from more senior colleagues about our project which was very helpful Outside of that there were other colleagues who were very willing to offer support
Culture
Very good in the Glasgow office, not at all what I expected from a bank - Great with flexible working (only need to be in person on team anchor days) - Flexible seating plans - Lots of fun events (cookie baking) which make work more lively - People are always very positive
Your Impressions
Very good - enough that I am planning to return after university
Yes
For applying to the internship: - There are quite a few assessments to do during the application process so make sure to give yourself enough time to do them all - Assessment centre is far more competancy-based than focusing on coding stuff - good idea might be to have a friend do a mock interview which can help settle some nerves
