Overview
It was a thoroughly insightful experience, the team laid out a structured week full of different activities and tasks. I began my week in the office assisting in land valuation by compiling comparable sold pieces of land, and producing reports for clients advising them on the changes to the rental market. This was followed by two estate visits conducting tenancy inspections and recording findings to produce a report for the clients.
Skills
I have learnt several new skills during my time with Savills, this included the application of valuation methods discussed at university and how they are utilised in varying scenarios, how to produce a professional report advising clients, conducting a right to rent check on a prospective tenant and in fact about GDPR and how Savills manages confidential information and data online protecting their clients and employees. I further developed my interpersonal skills and industry knowledge.
Business Insight
A company as vast as Savills informed me of a wide scope for career progression and how as graduates there are a huge amount of different paths one can take. As I was based in a 'regional' office it was interesting to see how they work as an relatively compact team but also how the collaborate with the wider company, including sitting in on an online meeting with all the rural offices in the south-west and reviewing how the month has been and what their strategy will be moving forward adapting to changes within the industry.
Culture
The company culture and atmosphere was highly inclusive from day one, I was provided with sufficient assistance and briefing on tasks whilst also being given some responsibility to produce my own work. This culture of valuing all team members opinions was notable and made me feel like contributions I made where appreciated, it was impressive to say the least. The office environment fostered people to enjoy where they work but maintain a high and premium standard of work that reflects the reputation of a firm like Savills, instilling a sense of pride and motivation to uphold the highest standards go the extra mile.
Your Impressions
I could not stress enough the extent to how much I enjoyed myself during my week with Savills, which seemed to fly by. It has motivated me further, especially meeting members of the team that had gone through the graduate pathway process themselves, giving me advice and pointers taking me one step closer to hopefully passing my APC one day. It affirmed my desire to work within the industry and I am sure will serve to carry me further on my road to becoming a Chattered Surveyor myself.
Yes
My major tip to anyone hoping to undertake a placement at Savills is to not be afraid to be yourself as they truly do value individualism in their employees. Furthermore, they do expect a high standard of professionalism so make sure to go the extra mile and really do your research and know your stuff. Most importantly like any job in property its all about people and being able to communicate professionally, politely and effectively when getting your points across and ultimately enjoying what you do with a positive outlook reflecting this in your general demeanour.
