    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working on a team consisting of engineers on a long term project for the company. This entails working under managers and senior engineers who will give parts of their own project for you to work on while giving you advice and helping you develop your skills needed for a business and teamworking environment.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • How to use Simulink and MATLAB to help with coding solutions as well as developed my understanding of C and Python has definitely helped in my long-term development. Furthermore, the working in a team and the ease of asking other engineers questions or for help definitely improved my confidence and helped make me a better programmer during my time with the company.

    Responsibilities

  • Depending on the project you are on, varies how much work and responsibility you get. I was assigned a project which was in the middle of development so vital but manageable pieces of work were assigned to me as well as smaller tasks assigned to me by direct manager and the project supervisor as well.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • BAE offer a lot of support for interns, placement students and those starting in the grad scheme. Each new starter is assigned a buddy who is a similar age to you but has been with the company for a few years to help you settle into the job, a manager who isn't involved in your project is also assigned to you to oversee your time with the company and offer advice and support.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture and moral of the general staff was generally high, the team I was working on was coming up to a project deadline but yet their seem to be little stress due to managers and other staff supporting parts of the project which needed more support. Furthermore, there was a large amount of support for minorities and women in the workplace which provides a lot of confidence for these groups and is nice to see.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems
  • While BAE is bothered about your knowledge in chosen areas, be that in engineering or in other departments. It is more important how you are as a person, one of the main ethos of BAE is hard work and the ability to work in a team, a person who fits into these categories will be favoured due to their ability to fit straight into a team and complete work through their own determination and by asking other employees for help.
