    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Requirements writing and simulation work for complex systems. Unfortunately all of the work here is security controlled so can't elaborate more that that.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My document writing skills have increased since doing my placement alongside my presentational skills from giving talks to our customer. The business widely developed my technical skills and understanding when it came to MATLAB Simulink, greatly assisting me when it came time to carry out my final year project for university.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given more responsibility than most as I inherited many systems when the person looking after me left the business, the business offered me a 3 month extension to my year long placement due to my knowledge and technical ability when it came to a particular system that only myself and one other person was working on. I was trusted by my team to liaise with an adjacent team and our primary customer.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • for the first 9 months of my placement my first point of contact was a senior member of my team rather than my line manager due to how busy they were. This was extremely helpful, however due to the nature of my team we were primarily online which made getting up to speed at the start difficult.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was very relaxed, calm and inviting. I never had any real issues with any members of staff, even if some were sometimes hard to get hold of.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and feel like it was key for my development between 2nd and 3rd year. Thankfully the business offered me a graduate role towards the end of my placement and I have now started in that role since September 2024.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems
  • Plan out interview questions in advance using the STAR method and take the time to familiarise with public knowledge about the products the company is currently making in the area you are entering. Show enthusiasm and make sure to mention any extra curricular in your interview. Make sure you familiarise yourself with the V-model and Engineering life cycle.
