    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I assist with helping our client’s employees learn the tax implications of their move into or out of the UK. Having a buddy and spending time with my cohort improved my confidence in the office. My day changes now and then some days I’m calling up HMRC discussing a client and attending catch up meetings with the team discussing plans, other days I’m attending tax meetings with the clients and note taking then filling in forms, drafting emails and letters and data work. Attending catch up webinars with the early careers team and regular casual meet ups with my colleagues and cohort was regular and during early careers week I attended plenty of live webinars. I also had an extracurricular during my time there and helped facilitate sessions with a partner school. I planned leaflets to hand out too and revised presentations.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed my networking and interpersonal skills by coming into the office and chatting with my new team. I became familiar with vocabularies and professional mannerisms eg how to bring up a case to hmrc. Having attended early careers webinars I learnt how to prioritise my health and balance work and life. I also learnt methods to story tell. Helping with the extracurricular partner school event improved my adaptability and communication skills. I learnt how to manage my time by having a checklist and that helped me work in a team better.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given quite a few tasks during my time such as making hmrc calls, attending client briefings, making notes and forms, researching and filling in clients details on excel, analysing hmrc documents and drafting a few emails. However the there were times I had to chase for work as my team was busy with clients and trying to find work for me. At times the work they wanted me to do required me having access to a software I did not have access to since I was not going to be there for long, and so I was not able to do it. Instead, to pass my time I took up an excel course that was on the Deloitte intranet.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a buddy who helped me settle in which was great- I also had a people leader to report my concerns and goals to. A lot of my colleagues saved time to hand me work or have catch ups which I’m grateful for. There was also a connect club process where I was matched with another intern in my cohort to have a catch up which was lovely and helped me meet people from other sectors in Deloitte. There were weekly early careers webinars and IT support. They did reply to any concerns I had. At the beginning of my placement, I was not given a buddy or a people leader and there was a bit of a bumpy ride there however it was resolved and sometimes my team was busy or couldn’t find work for me.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The environment was very collaborative- there were many spaces to work whether it’s in meeting rooms or the office space or a more relaxed environment with couches and warmer lights. It’s fairly easy to chat to people and introduce yourself however at times people are busy so it’s best to arrange a meeting or catch up. I had one with a senior member and they were welcoming and relaxed. Everyone is like minded- helpful and ambitious. It motivates you to work hard sometimes it gets stressful so there are spaces to wind down in the office and people you can talk to. There is a lot of support for your health and career such as online courses or the people around you. It helped to be present and connect with others-reach out first. There are lots of societies and extra curricular sessions to join.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my line of work greatly and met great people. I enjoyed learning about tax laws and how they affect client investments. I also enjoyed catching up with my cohort, helping out in extra curricular activities, social work and the early careers webinars. I also would like to mention the induction days as they were really fun and a magician performed there! Overall, I would recommend my placement. The only thing I’d like to wish is if there was a chance to rotate lines of work so we had more exposure. If I had done it differently I would attend more social events and connect with more people on a deeper level.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
  • Research Deloitte’s values to see if they align with yours and practice solving consulting case studies. Remember to be yourself and enjoy the process. I would also suggest to reach out to Deloitte on their ‘dot’ chat if possible if they want to reach out for any questions as it is better than emailing in my experience. Be patient the application process takes time. Connect with people from Deloitte to make it easier to settle in.
