Overview
My primary daily task was to work on my project on the systematic trading strategies desk. The first phase of this project was to research and implement a more robust performance assessment method for the systematic trading strategies. The second phase required me to optimise the performance of the systematic trading strategies. All implementation was done in python. I interacted with my colleagues in the Energy Markets Quantitative Analytics team every day.
Skills
I developed my coding skills in Python. I developed my communication and presentation skills. I developed my knowledge and understanding of financial maths, particularly surrounding systematic trading strategies.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given a lot of responsibility as the project that I was working on was a real piece of work for the team that was critical for the development of their systematic trading strategies. I also presented to the Executive Committee who engaged with my presentation on the work that I had done and were interested in its future applications.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance. I had an excellent internship mentor that engaged with me and my project every day of my internship. The interns also had regular pre-arranged training days and teaching sessions.
Culture
Excellent. I did not meet a single person that was not friendly and welcoming. It was possible to message almost anyone in the company via MS Teams and arrange to meet.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship program.
Yes
Brush up on your coding skills as you will probably need them. Although you do not need to be from a computer science/software engineering background to succeed on an internship at EDF Trading.
