Overview
Leading a research and development project cantered around the the FFC electroreduction of solid oxides within molten salt reactors. Each day could involve research, data analysis, practical laboratory preparation or processing, and running or overseeing experiments. Each week will generally have a good mix of all aforementioned aspects, but this varies between projects and roles.
Skills
My skills improved massively throughout my placement. I learnt and developed valuable industry-based skills, as well as transferable skills such as organisation, presenting, critical thinking, and time management. Being project lead allowed me valuable insight into higher responsibilities within a job role, and working effectively as part of the extended team.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibilities, and made project lead for a contract with large international clients. Throughout the way, however, I had amazing support from my line manager and surrounding team and am overall very grateful that I was trusted with such a project - as it allowed me to to grow and develop even further than otherwise possible within the professional environment.
Support & Guidance
Lots of support and guidance was provided and the team was always available if I had any questions or concerns. I had monthly reviews wherein my line manager commented on the progress I had made, as well as making sure that the current support was sufficient, During these reviews, I was able to bring up any worries or issues regarding the workplace or project and - if required - receive extra support for it.
Culture
As a small team, the workplace is very friendly with jokes and pranks. meetings outside of work were not commonplace but were well received when organised. Weekly traditions were started such as "Butty Fridays", when the Biscuit battle is also fought (via quiz) to determine who must bring biscuits in the following week!
Your Impressions
Very much so. Both the people and the work made the placement very enjoyable.
Yes
Diversity of skills, openness to help the team, and willingness to learn are all valuable!
