Overview
My role was mainly modelling a system in MATLAB and Simulink. This involved talking to stakeholders from different specialisms & teams. On a day-to-day basis, my work could be split into; research topics (online and meeting people in person), writing code, debugging code, and integrating new bits of code. I would organise a meeting to display my work once a project is nearing completion. Why I did it, how it was done, & what it means for the people in the meeting.
Skills
I developed my existing coding skills in Matlab & Simulink. Learning additional skills in using a remote repository for continuous integration, & using the requirements toolbox to create a digital thread. A major development in presentation skills and talking to wider colleagues (outside your direct team).
Responsibilities
I was given an individual project to work on by myself. I was responsible for myself & the direction of the project was mainly decided by myself.
Support & Guidance
I received support from my line manager, task manager, and wider colleagues. Further support was given by HR and tech support.
Culture
The company atmosphere was professional and respectful. People could see how their work affected the wider goal & this drove people to get stuff done to a high quality. Safety was at the forefront of what AWE does since everyone wanted to keep each other safe.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement greatly. The internal student group ran socials regularly allowing for the dispersed new employees to meet & get to know each other. My colleagues were very welcoming & helped me settle in. The work was interesting & challenged me.
