Responsibilities
Yes i was often given a specific task to go away and work on individually which i then fed back to my direct team and/or line manager for feedback/ improvements to make. However, i sometimes felt i could have been pushed further in regards to my work load as occassionally i felt like i had litte to do.
Support & Guidance
Sufficient amounts of support were given during my placement, I always felt i had someone to discuss my work with if i ever needed help. Other forms of support i has access to was a mentor which meant i could learn about and explore other areas of RA alongside my job based tasks. Although i feel i would of benefited more from working more directly with people on site as most of my team were remote/ based internationally.
Culture
The company gave a good impression in terms of how they value their employees. I experience lots of employee benefits during my placement which made you feel valued and also indicated that my work had been recognised. The general atmosphere was good and all my team and wider colleagues were pleasant and welcoming. However, i felt the company could have made more of an effort in places to welcome us into the site as often we had to find out about events/ services etc. between us rather than being told. Although, after working with my new students replacing us it was good to see that specific sessions had been timetables for them to explore what the company is all about and experiences/ opportunities available to them whilst also allowing them to network with all students from a range of departments.
Your Impressions
To a large extent i enjoyed my placement, i felt i gained lots of valuable experience within the medical device industry to take forward with me in the future and also developed on many soft skills which i can apply to my remaining time at university and moving forwards. I also had the opportunity to see a wide range of areas within RA which enhanced my experience at the company. However, i felt the social opportunities were quite limited during my placement year. My direct team were mainly remote which limited the chance to fully get to know them and little effort was made to encourage all the placement students to socialise together both inside and outside of work.
Yes
Seek out as many opportunities from the year as you can... explore the experiences and activities you may be able to get involved with both related to and outside of your job role as this really enhanced my time at Johnson & Johnson!
